SUMMARY:Sustainable Wardrobe Workshop
DESCRIPTION:\n\nThe idea of slow fashion can often seem inaccessible\, unaf
 fordable\, or simply too time consuming for everyday life\, but this works
 hop will teach basic\, easily adaptable skills to create a sustainable war
 drobe without having to purchase any additional clothing.\n\nStudents are 
 encouraged to bring 3 well-loved\, favorite garments in need of a little s
 prucing. The garments can range from a worn\, older sweatshirt\, to a more
  formal dress with an unfortunate stain\, to a favorite pair of jeans with
  lovely worn knees. Think natural fibers such as linen\, cotton\, rayon an
 d silk. These should be garments that bring you joy and that you want to c
 ontinue living with.\n\nWe’ll begin the day exploring the world of plant
 -based dyes. Using indigo and learning about other dyes like black walnut\
 , avocado and osage wood\, participants will learn techniques for using pl
 ant-based dyes to give a new life to old garments. Participants will dye f
 abrics to use as mending materials\, and learn how to make dyes at home wi
 th easily accessible materials. Participants will also explore the world o
 f meditative\, slow stitching. This includes stitching for embellishment\,
  beading\, couching\, and sashiko stitching for mending and reinforcing we
 ak stress points in garments. Students will learn which mending and reinfo
 rcement techniques work for different people\, and how to make clothing wo
 rk for you in your every day life. Participants will begin to see their cl
 othing as an extension of their body\, and something that can grow and cha
 nge\, rather than having to purchase new clothing.\n\nIt is our hope that 
 participants leave with a different viewpoint regarding fast fashion and c
 onsumerism when it comes to clothing\, and will feel empowered with a skil
 lset to continue their slow fashion at home in a sustainable\, affordable 
 way. Using their 3 renewed garments as a roadmap\, this workshop aims to p
 lant the seed for a lifestyle shift\, and a wonderful journey of slow fash
 ion for participants.\n\nSunday April 14\, 2019\, 11:00 AM-5:00 PM\n\nClas
 s fee is $100. A materials fee of $25 will be due to teacher at time of cl
